Between the boards of this radical publication, the unique forum of ideas that is Artspace comes alive in a wiley, provocative and thoughtful compilation of image and text. Documenting and interpreting an irreverent 15-year history of exhibitions, publications, performances, video and film, this book challenges the notions of what an organization for and about artists and their ideas can be on the cusp of the 21st century.
Through Artspace grants , Mark Pauline and the guerrilla battalion of Survival Research Laboratory terrorized the civilian status quo with a deployment of sci-fi robots and air cannons, Karen Finely pushed the limits at Theater Artaud with her Theory of Total Blame and Jenny Holzer sucker-punched a legion of unsuspecting fans on the LED sign at Candlestick Park during a Giants game. Exhibitions by General Idea, Jessica Diamond, David Mach and Patrick Ireland, stills from videos by Tony Oursler and Sophie Calle among others are included in this volume as part of the Artspace program.
From Shift magazine , articles by Ingrid Sischy and Kathy Acker , images from the newly released film Far Corners, Backward Glances directed by Chris Munch and previews of never been seen before stills from underground Lunch Movies of emeritus museum director Jim Elliot , featuring badass cultural luminaries from Candy Darling to Andy Warhol are also included. Artspace recently celebrated the publication of its 10th book, Stardumb,a collaboration of artist John DeFazio and noted writer Dave Hickey. Other books have featured seminal work by David Wojnarowicz, Jack Pierson and Jim Lewis, Nan Goldin and Klaus Kertess, Gregory Crewdson and Rick Moody, and A.M. Homes.
A small picture gallery trying to show all those years of great experiments.
